Mercado Central de Alicante (The Central Market of Alicante), built in 1921, has a significant history of its own. The building is connected to a famous square of the city the Plaza 25 Mayo (the 25th of May Square) to memorialise the 300 innocents who died in the Spanish Civil War in 1938 when the Italian Fascist air force (Francisco Franco) bombarded Alicante and hit the market.

Here one can find fresh and locally grown products. Many of the owners of the market stalls are local families who have been operating the business for decades and persist by passing it down through the generations.
